WE YEARN FOR GOODNESS

LENT 2022

Lord, I will learn also to kneel down

into the world of the invisible,

the inscrutable and the everlasting.

Then I will move no more than the leaves of a tree

on a day of no wind, bathed in light,

like the wanderer who has come home at last

and kneels in peace, done with all unnecessary things;

every motion; even words.

God speaks to each of us as he makes us,

then walks with us silently out of the night.

These are the words we dimly hear:

You, sent out beyond your recall,

go to the limits of your longing.

Embody me.

Flare up like a flame

and make big shadows I can move in.

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.

Just keep going. No feeling is final.

Don’t let yourself lose me.

Nearby is the country they call life.

You will know it by its seriousness.

Give me your hand.

It doesn’t have to be

the blue iris, it could be

weeds in a vacant lot, or a few

small stones; just

pay attention, then patch

a few words together and don’t try

to make them elaborate, this isn’t

a contest but a doorway

into thanks, and a silence in which

another voice may speak.

(‘Praying’ by Mary Oliver)

A thorn has entered your foot.

That is why you weep at times

at night.

There are some in this world

who can pull it out.

The skill that takes they have learned

from Him.

(Catherine of Siena)

I was scared

A friend came over

We talked

I was less scared

Then she did my dishes
